Mavs Struggle in loss to Warhawks; 95-70 (1/14/05)
Playing shorthanded and on too little rest, the Dallas Wheelchair
Mavericks struggled to find any rhythm and were beaten soundly by a
talented and focused Wisconsin-Whitewater team. The loss was the
Mavericks first of the season. The Warhawks used a balanced attack
(5 players in double figures) to establish an early lead and never
looked back. The Mavs, playing with only 6 available players, shot
poorly in the first half and dug themselves a 16-point half-time
deficit. In the second half, Wisconsin-Whitewater maintained their
strong defensive focus, never allowing Dallas to establish any
consistent offensive flow. Stephen Welch led the Maverick scorers
with 21 points.
Dallas Rebounds to Trounce Illinois; 103-64 (1/15/05)
A focused Maverick team returned to action on Saturday with a
103-64 trouncing of the University of Illinois. After a tight first
quarter, the Mavs built a 12-point lead in the second quarter when
Illini point guard Denny Muha left the game with 4 fouls. Although
still limited to 6 available players, Dallas went to a pressing
defense that forced multiple turnovers and bad shots by the
collegians. Dallas went back to the press in the third quarter when
Muha picked up his 5th foul and returned to the Illini bench. By the
quarters end, the Maverick lead had grown to 26 points and the Mavs
cruised from there. Stephen Welch led all scorers with 37 points.
Paul Schulte added 30 points that included 4 three-pointers. Jeff
Glasbrenner chipped in 16 points.
Mavericks Wrap-up Collegiate Challenge with 89-80 Win Over UTA
(1/16/05)
In a
great game for fans, the Dallas Wheelchair Mavericks rallied in the
fourth quarter to beat the University of Texas at Arlington, 89-80.
Early on, UTA had their way, building a double-digit lead midway
through the first quarter. Dallas stormed back in the second quarter
taking a 40-39 half-time lead on an acrobatic buzzer-beater by Paul
Schulte. The Mavs built an 8 point third quarter lead, but UTA
fought back to tie the Mavs and build a 6 point lead of their own by
the mid point of the fourth quarter. Down the stretch, Dallas
tightened up on the defensive end and worked harder offensively to
get the ball inside to big men Jason Van Beek and Jeff Glasbrenner.
Van Beek and Glasbrenner drew fouls and scored big baskets to pull
out the win. Glasbrenner finished with 26 points and 15 rebounds.
Stephen Welch had a strong offensive game with 25 points and 5
assists. Paul Schulte added 13 points and 10 rebounds to the
Maverick cause.
